If you want to learn how to play lead guitar, I have a
few steps for you to follow. There are some guitar players that don't mind
playing the acoustic version of an instrument, but there are those that really want
to play some loud, blasting lead guitar. You want to get your guitar and
really get into the music, into a blaring solo, rather than playing some little quiet
song that you hear on the oldies station.
Here are 5
steps to learn how to play lead guitar:
1. Be able to identify the key of any music. If you
can't read music, then you will need to depend on your ear for music.
Identifying the key the music is in will be a huge boost to your playing
abilities. A method you may want to try is to listen to the first and last chord of a song. You will then be
able to identify the Key Chord. This will require some practice of you sitting
and playing the different chords this way. Listen to the chord of the song, and
then try to find it on your guitar.
2. Learn the 5 note scales, which is also called the
pentatonic scale. This is the easiest scale for you to learn. A
pentatonic scale has five shapes, but you will begin by learning one
shape. You can find it on Google or in any guitar book, but when you find
it, start playing it until you have it mastered. As you practice it you
will improve your muscle memory and your precision, which are both essential for
anyone wanting to play lead guitar.
3. Associate the scale with a music key. Find the best pentatonic position that
works best to the key of your favorite song that you are working on. This
is where a guitar neck diagram will help.
4. Licks - learn as many
as you can. You will find that there are lead guitarists who spend hours
on end learning new licks, trying to invent or find new ones. For most lead
guitarists, this is their favorite part of playing.
5. Time to Play! You have now learned to how to play
lead guitar by being able to identify the key of any piece of music.
You can associate it with the music scale, learned some great new licks and how
to put it all into your own style.
